Incorporating Rituals Into Your Daily Life
A few years ago when traveling to Bali, the island of the gods and demons, I quickly noticed offerings - known as Canang Sari - left outside of homes, shops and temples as part of Balinese daily ritual. Every morning, you can witness men and women placing these tiny palm leaves filled with colorful flowers and burning incense.
Commitment and devotion are what come to mind when thinking of what a ritual is. Unlike routine, ritual is imbued with purpose and meaning. By incorporating small rituals into your daily life, you’re elevating experiences and setting the tone of your day on a higher level.
These rituals don’t need to be complicated and overthought. Some ordinary activities can be elevated into ritual, whether you want to connect with yourself or with others. You will quickly realize that by turning a routine into meaningful activity, it will become more enjoyable and a part of your day that you’ll look forward to.
Here are some rituals to explore to have a more intentional and meaningful life.
RITUALS FOR THE SELF:
Wake up at least 10 minutes earlier, prepare some herbal infusion and sip from your favorite mug.
Open the balcony or window and soak up the brisk morning air.
Go for a walk in nature every day even for just 5 minutes. If you can do it walk barefoot or swim in the ocean.
Every evening, light a candle or incense before going to bed or to accompany your meditation or yoga practice.
RITUALS FOR CONNECTION WITH OTHERS:
If you’re living with a partner, family, or flatmates, have at least a meal per week without the distraction of phones or television.
Spend less time on your devices and instead schedule days and times to respond to messages, or view emails, and so on.
